The all-new GM (G Master) series lens is designed for Sony NEX/ALPHA compact system cameras (CSC) with both Full Frame and APS-C sensor sizes.

The lens features a basic focal length range of 24-70mm (36-105mm on NEX/ALPHA cameras with APS-C sensor), the top-of-the-line GM series optical system, high constant f/2 aperture .8

over the entire focal length range, 9-blade contoured aperture for perfect background blur - bokeh, fast piezoelectric autofocus motor, robust lightweight aluminium alloy construction and professional-grade sealing.

The lens optical system can focus from as close as 38cm, providing 0.24x image magnification. It consists of 18 lenses arranged in 13 groups. The optical system uses one specially shaped lens with an extremely aspherical surface, one lens made of low dispersion ED glass and one lens made of special low dispersion Super ED glass with Nano AR anti-reflective treatment.

The angle of view of the lens at 24mm is 84° and at 70mm it is 34°, then when mounted on a NEX/ALPHA model with APS-C sensors it is 61° at 36mm and 23° at 105mm.

The lens has a high aperture that is constant across the focal length range, starting at f/2.8. You can stop down to f/22 for depth of field work. The lens features a fast autofocus system that relies on a silent piezoelectric focusing motor.

The lens' high-end optics are housed in a tube made of lightweight and extremely strong aluminium alloy. Its mechanical construction is very robust and is professionally sealed against the ingress of dust and moisture into the lens interior. There is no change in lens length when focusing and zooming, and the lens itself weighs 886g at 88 x 136mm.

The front of the lens is threaded for conventional 82mm diameter circular filters, which do not rotate making it easy to use transition and polarising filters.
